Helicopter Crash Caught on Video by Campers

ELKO COUNTY, Nev. – A pilot and three firefighters shared a near-death moment after their helicopter went down in the mountains of Nevada. The incident was captured by a camper while he was filming the rescuers pick up stranded climbers on a cliff top.
After the crew picked up their fellow rescuer near the cliff precipice, the helicopter lifted up and quickly banked hard right, then taking a ne More..ar vertical descent, pulling up before nearly nose diving into the ground. The helicopter’s rotors thrashed through bushes as the craft skimmed over the crowded campground below, when it finally reared up and stalled, crashing to the ground.
“The chopper went down, it went all the way down really fast, hit the bushes,” says Frank Ransijn, a camper who caught the incident on his camera.
The incident happened at Angel Lake Campground, near Wells, Nev. on Monday.
Ransijn was camping with his family, on a trip from his home country in the Netherlands. The family recorded the crash from their campsite as the helicopter swooped through the busy campground. And as Ransijn was nearing the crash site he came upon the wreckage with surprising good news — all the crew were ok.
The helicopter was in pieces, but the pilot was able to walk away with a head injury. The three firefighters were not seriously hurt.
“The chopper came down, just hit the ground, we heard a noise it was really loud, the motorhome was just shaking,” said 18-year-old, Woter Ransijn.
The Ransijn family says it was amazing the pilot avoided the RV’s, tents, and people fishing in the lake.
Woter Ransij is an exchange student from the Netherlands. His brother, mother and father came to the U.S. to pick him up, but were touring the country first. They witnessed what could have been a deadly accident, and took away something more akin to a miracle.
“I thought I’m going with my parents I’m 18, it’s probably going to be fun — now something exciting like this I can tell a story with my parents, [we] really did see something cool,” said Woter.
“We already travel 4,000 miles, we still have 2,000 to go, so we have adventure everyday, this one was a big one,” said father Ransijn.
